Illumino Counseling was started by Sofia Neville, LCPC to provide a space where Catholic and Christian values are incorporated into mental health treatment. We aim to provide a space where you can trust that your clinical provider shares your faith and respects your values.
Our company’s name is inspired by St. Thomas Aquinas’s assertion that “it is better to illuminate than just shine.” To shine is to merely emit one’s own light, but to illuminate is to offer enough light that others might see. For example, consider the stars and the moon in the night. The stars shine, but since they are primarily their own small source of energy, the light they offer is limited. The moon however reflects the light of the sun - a great external energy source. The moon thereby makes visible – illuminates - what would otherwise be in darkness. In life we can offer some light of our own, but truly illuminating our paths requires working in conjunction with another – we must actively receive light and love from others, especially God, then share that light and love with those in our lives. At Illumino we understand, however, that wounds from things either we have done or that have been done to us can disconnect us from others and from ourselves. Isolation presents a profound challenge, as when we are alone, the merely shining light we have is limited and may begin to dim. We believe that this is where our holistic approach to counseling can help illuminate your path in life.
As the Moon reflects the sun, we work to reflect God’s hope and healing to you through the therapeutic relationship. We work to bring illuminating light to the wounds that you carry through evidence-based counseling techniques as well as faith-based and philosophical understandings of the world into session. Our mission is to provide holistic mental health services that foster healing and growth, that can in turn bring light to the paths of others. We hope to illuminate the way for you first, using our holistic approach, and trust that in time you will be able to help illuminate the way for those in your life as well.

We understand belonging as a sense of security in relationships with others, which is rooted in knowing that we have been made in the image and likeness of God. Belonging allows for connection and collaboration, which foster our own healing and allow us to touch the lives of others in the process.
We regard hope as the desire for healing and confidence in the ability to receive it. This is done through trust and active participation in God’s plan for us; hope leads to living wholeheartedly. As St. Catherine of Siena said, “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.”
We believe that, as Aristotle discusses regarding virtue, balance is key for flourishing. Balance requires mindful and habitual decision making to develop a sustainable rhythm in the different dimensions of life. The byproduct of this rhythm is a state of wellbeing and intrapersonal peace.
I graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville with a Bachelors in Clinical Psychology in 2020 and with a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, with a concentration in Crisis and Trauma, in 2021. I have been practicing since 2020.
I am a practicing Catholic and believe that each person has been endowed with inherent dignity and worth by God. This belief is foundational to my counseling practice and how I work with my clients - I strive to receive every client I encounter with the adopting love of Christ. I come from a multicultural background, and appreciate being able to provide a multicultural lens.
I love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, fishing, ATVing, and traveling. I also love to read, draw, and paint. My favorite books tend to be classic novels, such as The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Count of Monte Cristo, or psychology self-help books, such as Daring Greatly and Man’s Search for Meaning. I love listening to music as well, and appreciate a wide variety of artists.
